How Are the Batteries In the Battery Backup System Replaced?

Why Do Batteries in a Backup Generator Need Replacing?

EverSafe uses sealed lead-acid (AGM) batteries in all its battery backup systems. These batteries store the energy required to run appliances using a chemical medium known as the “electrolyte.”

Over time, with repeated charging and discharging, the electrolyte’s chemical composition deteriorates, eventually making the battery unable to hold a charge.

Due to this natural degradation process, it’s advised to replace the batteries in your rechargeable generator every four years.

Replacing batteries at this interval helps maintain peak system performance. If the batteries aren’t changed, the runtime of the generator will be shorter than what was originally specified.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace the Batteries in a Backup Power Generator?

Battery backup systems don’t require frequent maintenance—just periodic testing. The main ongoing expense is battery replacement, which typically costs around 15–20% of the system’s original price.

Since the batteries only need to be changed once every four years to keep the system functioning optimally, the annual maintenance cost averages out to just about 4–5% of the initial purchase price.

Where Can I Buy New Batteries for a Battery-Powered Generator?

Battery Backup Systems rely heavily on reliable batteries. That’s why EverSafe recommends purchasing replacement batteries directly from EverSafe every time. EverSafe will match any comparable price offered by other vendors.

These battery-powered generators contain sensitive electronics and are thoughtfully designed. Buying batteries from EverSafe offers the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your system running smoothly without concerns.

Using unverified or inappropriate batteries from third parties can lead to:

  • Damage to the battery backup system and its internal components
  • Harm to appliances connected to the system
  • Reduced runtime capability
  • Degraded overall performance

Batteries obtained from third-party sources are not covered under EverSafe’s four-year warranty.

How to Recycle Used or Spent Generator Batteries

EverSafe strongly encourages the recycling of batteries once they are no longer functional. Although recycling mandates vary, over half of U.S. states require proper disposal of used batteries.

EverSafe does not currently provide battery recycling services. Instead, we suggest contacting local waste management or recycling centers. These providers are equipped to handle and advise on proper battery disposal while remaining informed about relevant local regulations.

In regions where recycling is mandatory, a “core fee” or refundable deposit may be required to facilitate lawful disposal. This fee helps offset the cost of new batteries.

Elevators in an Outage: Why Battery Backup Belongs in Your Building Plan

When the power goes out, your elevator becomes a business issue long before it becomes a technical one. Tenants stuck upstairs, customers unable to reach you, staff hauling goods by stairs—every minute of downtime chips away at revenue, reputation, and safety. Traditionally, a diesel generator handled this risk. Today, battery-based backup offers a quieter, cleaner, […]
