Case Study: How Battery Backup Power Protects Laboratory Operations for a National Research Institute

A national research institute needed to replace the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) supporting its magnetic materials research. The lab develops better ways to measure how these materials behave, helping researchers use them reliably in new technologies. Its replacement system needed to protect both the measurement instruments and the equipment supporting their operation.

The Challenge

The lab identified several loads requiring backup power: a magnetometer, a computer and monitor, a compressor control box, an electronics cabinet, and two scroll pumps.

An interruption to this setup could disrupt data collection and leave researchers spending time restoring equipment operation instead of advancing their work. The institute needed a reliable UPS sized for the combined requirements of these devices to help reduce the risk of lost data and downtime.

EverSafe Power’s Approach

Using the equipment specifications supplied by the institute, EverSafe Power evaluated the identified loads and recommended the Reassurance (MHW6040V), which delivers 6000 watts of Split-phase power with a 4.8 KWH battery bank, and is ready to activate instantly during an outage.

Rather than relying solely on the previous setup as a sizing reference, our team referenced the lab’s full list of equipment to be powered to guide system selection – and ensure that every device plugged into the system would be protected for the full duration of the lab’s required runtime.

Supporting Research Continuity

The recommended solution was designed to maintain power to the designated equipment during utility interruptions, helping the institute protect work in progress.

This project highlights a practical consideration for research facilities: backup power planning should account for the supporting devices that keep an experiment running in addition to the primary instrument. EverSafe Power helps facilities identify load and runtime requirements and select a system suited to the work they need to protect. Contact a member of our team today for a free power assessment for your unique application.

How Does Battery Backup Power Reduce Carbon Emissions?

The more useful question is not whether a battery is “emissions-free.” It is where emissions occur across the full backup power strategy and which sources the battery allows a facility to reduce or avoid.

Preparing Industrial Facilities for El Niño Weather Patterns

The question is not simply whether El Niño will cause an outage at a particular site. It is whether existing continuity plans account for a season in which familiar assumptions about weather, utility reliability, site access, and restoration time may no longer hold.
