Elevator Backup Power: Providing a Tailored Solution to Support Critical Loads

Elevators are an essential part of modern parking garage design, providing accessibility and supporting vertical circulation throughout a facility. Designing a battery backup solution that accounts for both the elevator and supporting equipment helps maintain operation when utility power is interrupted.

The owner of an office building outside Atlanta, Georgia encountered this challenge while designing a new three-story parking garage. The project required a reliable backup power solution for both the elevator and its built-in fans to help keep the inside of the elevator cool for occupants in the Atlanta heat.

The Solution

The engineering team at EverSafe evaluated the application’s electrical requirements and determined the appropriate power capacity and runtime needed for each load. Based on that analysis, two dedicated battery backup systems were recommended:

  • A hardwired three-phase, 480-volt battery backup system, comparable to P60-12LI600-40, to provide reliable backup power for the elevator.
  • A freestanding hardwired single phase, 208-volt battery backup system, MHW100160V, dedicated to powering the elevator’s built-in fans.

Providing separate systems for each project requirement ensured that both the elevator and its supporting equipment received appropriately sized backup power while simplifying the overall system design.

The Result: A Reliable, Tailored Elevator Backup Power System

The completed solution provides dependable battery backup power for both critical components of the elevator system. During a utility outage, the elevator can continue operating while a dedicated backup system maintains power to the built-in fans. By sizing each system specifically for its application, the facility received a solution engineered around its operational requirements rather than relying on a standard, one-size-fits-all approach.

Engineering the Right Solution

Every elevator installation presents different electrical requirements, making proper system sizing an important part of the design process. Factors such as voltage, phase configuration, startup current, runtime requirements, and auxiliary equipment all influence the appropriate backup solution. Evaluating these requirements early helps architects, engineers, and facility owners select a battery backup system that delivers reliable performance while supporting the intended elevator operating sequence when utility power is interrupted.
