Battery Backup Generator Size and Weight

How Much Space Does a Battery Powered Generator Occupy?

Hardwired and Standalone systems function similarly and have identical size and shape. Both are housed in off-white metal cabinets, measuring 9.75 inches in length and 18 inches in width (this includes the mounting flanges).

The only dimension that varies is the height, which depends on how many batteries are used for energy storage.

Smaller systems can be about 16.25 inches tall, roughly knee-height. The tallest units may reach up to 93.25 inches, nearly the height of a standard room ceiling. That means battery backup setups can fit into almost any space.

For instance, EverSafe’s most compact 1200-watt unit is 16.25 inches tall, 18 inches long, and 9.75 inches wide. As the battery capacity increases (e.g. 2.4, 3.6, 4.8 kWh), only the height increases; the floor space remains the same.

So even a system with four times the energy storage takes up less than three times the height, without expanding the footprint.

Standalone / Hardwired Backup System Dimensions

Hardwired and Standalone units may be described differently, but their size is identical. The units use the same off-white metal cabinets and share the dimensions of 9.75 inches long by 18 inches wide, including flanges.

The one differing measurement, again, is height, based on the number of batteries contained.

The smallest units stand at about 16.25 inches (knee height), whereas the largest can reach 93.25 inches (around 7 feet 8 inches), nearly room ceiling tall. This allows battery backup systems to be installed in most rooms.

Again, the 1200-watt model is 16.25″ H × 18″ L × 9.75″ W in its smallest form. As battery capacity rises (2.4, 3.6, 4.8 kWh), height increases but length and width stay constant.

Multi-Cabinet Standalone / Hardwired Battery Backup Systems

For customers—like ambulatory surgery centers—who require very large capacity, multi-cabinet Standalone/Hardwired units are available. These are extra cabinets attached directly beside the main unit, all having the same dimensions.

The benefit: much greater backup power availability, yet with a compact overall footprint.

Mobile Battery Backup Unit System Dimensions

These mobile units follow a cabinet-style design where height increases with added battery storage.

Because they must be movable, mobile units have specific design alterations.

They are built from stainless steel and are wider and longer, but shorter, than standard Standalone or Hardwired systems. Their dimensions are 28.25 inches in length, 16.5 inches in width, and the top surface serves as a clean counter space for medical materials.

Mobile systems come in three height classes:

  • One-tier: approx. 17.75 inches tall (knee height)
  • Two-tier: about 29.75 inches tall (waist height)
  • Three-tier: roughly 42.25 inches tall (chest height)

These tiers ensure safe ease of movement.

How Much Does a Battery Backup System Weigh?

The bulk of the weight comes from the batteries; the metal cabinets are relatively lightweight.

Because of this, system weights vary considerably. The lightest units are just over 150 pounds, while the heaviest can approach 800 pounds.

As power capacity goes up, so does weight—but this extra mass provides longer run-times without needing more floor area.

For Standalone and Hardwired systems:

  • They typically arrive in a partly disassembled state.
  • Once installed, they remain stationary.
  • Floor space utilized remains the same regardless of the number of batteries.

Hence:

  • Single installers are feasible, since no component exceeds ~60 pounds in weight.
  • Once set up, there’s no need to move the system, so weight is not an ongoing concern.
  • You can maximize backup power within the room you have.

If frequent movement of the system is anticipated, consider a Mobile System — these arrive fully assembled and include wheels so they can be rolled between locations as needed.

Elevators in an Outage: Why Battery Backup Belongs in Your Building Plan

When the power goes out, your elevator becomes a business issue long before it becomes a technical one. Tenants stuck upstairs, customers unable to reach you, staff hauling goods by stairs—every minute of downtime chips away at revenue, reputation, and safety. Traditionally, a diesel generator handled this risk. Today, battery-based backup offers a quieter, cleaner, […]

Could Battery Backup Help When Ski Lifts Stop During Outages?

Late November 2025, a routine afternoon at a ski area in Wisconsin turned into an emergency when a sudden power outage halted the resort’s main chairlift. Fourteen skiers and snowboarders at Sunburst Ski Hillwere left suspended mid-air — some for nearly an hour — until ski patrol, local firefighters, and sheriff’s deputies orchestrated a rope-chair […]

How EverSafe Backup Systems Let Your Team Actually Enjoy the Holidays

The holiday season is supposed to bring a sense of pause — a rare moment when manufacturing floors go quiet, facility teams breathe a little deeper, and operations leaders finally step away from the nonstop rhythm of production schedules. Yet for many industrial facilities, the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s aren’t a break at […]
